Something that irks photographers quite a bit

I'm just curious...are these two sentences the same?

A) You hire a photographer, they send you the images, and when you use them on Instagram, you use a filter.

B) You hire a writer, they send you the copy, and when you use it on your website, you change all the words.

If a writer sent me beautiful copy to use, I definitely wouldn't make changes. So why do clients put filters on images when they use them?

I'm not sure. They likely didn't clarify the type of work they wanted. Or maybe the photographer they chose isn't the best photographer for them (the creative preferences might be different - and that's ok!). But it does happen sometimes.

Photographers appreciate being given credit for their work...unless the work no longer looks like theirs. Just imagine a famous writer being given credit for changed writing,  misspelled words, and incorrect information.

No creator wants that! So we are grateful for using our work in the way we delivered it.

Happy Friday!

Wait, what kind of work do I do?

I decided to draw a Venn diagram about the type of photography I do these days. It's helpful to share info with both clients and friends!
  • On the left is work I seek out: brand, product, headshot, and event photography.
  • On the right is stuff I don't search for: fashion, family, sports, and art photography.
  • In the middle? Well there's confusing stuff there...
Picture
*Clothing: So why don't I do fashion but I do clothing photography? Because there's a huge difference between clothing product/lifestyle photography and artistic/fashion photography, right?

*Nature: I've never been sought out by a client to take nature photos. But I do enjoy taking photos in various cities and then selling them on my Print + Digital Shop. :)

*Weddings: I know, I know...this is the most confusing portion. Do I shoot weddings or do I not shoot weddings? Well to be honest, it depends on who I'm talking to in the moment. I actually love shooting weddings. They're fun and lucrative and my clients have always been amazing. But if I tell my commercial clients I shoot weddings, it may confuse them about the type of work I'm able to do. So I basically just chat with different clients in different ways.

So just connect with me, tell me what you're looking for, and I'll be very clear about what I do and what I don't. :) Thanks so much for reading about this stuff! If you have any questions, always feel free to reach out. :)

Happy Friday!

Great event photos: 3 things a photographer needs

There are three things event photographers need in order to take high quality photos:
Picture
Adequate light
Picture
Inadequate light
1. Must have adequate light. This is huge! An adequately lit stage provides such a high-quality photo compared to the inadequately lit stage. Photographers are stuck without the right lighting.

2. No screen background, please. We totally understand the need to show videos, information, etc. Just put the speaker 5-10' to the side of the screen, not right in front of it.

Tons of room behind audience

3. Give the photographer room to walk around. Without room to walk around, photographers are unable to take photos around the room, and they're also getting in the audience's way.

Follow these three tips, and your photographer will be able to take better photos!

Happy 1st Anniversary to Focus Friday!

Since I've been blogging once per week for an entire year, I decided to start vlogging (vlog = video + blog) at least once per month! I hope my videos are helpful,  entertaining, and encouraging. If there's ever any particular information you'd like me to cover, just click the "recommend a topic" button on the right hand side of the page (or the bottom of the page on mobile).

Today, I'm explaining what a DSLR camera is, and why you might want one.
Thanks for watching!

Happy Friday!
