You don't have to hire your friend

I am so SO supported by friends, family, past colleagues, clients, acquaintances, and so many people in this community. And I wouldn't be able to be self-employed without that support.

By support, I mean I've never really had to focus on traditional marketing of my business since referrals (and relationships and the internet!) are key.

So wait...why am I telling you that you don't have to hire your friend?

I met with five photographers a few nights ago at Platform Beer Co. - just to hang, have a drink, and talk shop. I told them I was writing this blog post and they agreed...

While we are so grateful for friends who hire us, we never expect them to do so. They should be hiring photographers whose work they are absolutely obsessed with - because that's so much more important for all involved! Our friend gets great work. Their photographer is supported. And we get to continue to work with clients who didn't even consider another photographer because they enjoy our work. Win win win!

And I don't just mean photographers - I mean any industry! Most people know quite a few others who provide products, services, etc.

See? We won't be offended if you choose someone else. :)

Happy Friday!

Should you buy the Annie Leibovitz MasterClass?

6/22/2018

Annie Leibovitz is one of the most well-known portrait photographers in the world, and if you're unsure if you've seen her work, let me tell you that you have.

She recently created a 15-lesson video course for MasterClass, an online education platform, and I was super excited to watch.

The cost? $90 for about 3 hours of video and PDFs for each lesson. Do you think that sounds like too much? (To be fair, I was truly going to purchase it, but my dad gifted it to me for Christmas instead.)

THE BIGGEST THINGS TO KNOW:
  • YES you should buy this if you're a photographer looking for creative inspiration
  • NO you should not buy this if you're looking for technical tips (she basically gave none)

WHAT I ENJOYED SO MUCH:
  • Her story and how she made it to where she is (so inspirational!)
  • How she works (she's like me!); she's self-taught and not into gear or technical aspects)
  • She taught me that it's ok to tell people I won't show them images until after they've been edited (sure I already knew that, but sometimes I need to be reminded that "it's ok")
  • She also taught me that I don't have to love my work - I can just redo it, or be ok with it not being perfect (as a perfectionist, I also need to be reminded of that)

I'm not giving much of it away, but I do think that the above should be considered prior to purchasing the lessons.

Enjoy (or don't)!

Happy Friday!

Ask friends what they do before you refer them

Simple, super helpful tip: if you have a self-employed friend and you want to support them, have a chat with them soon.

They might be updating their business goals. They might be charging more than last year. They might be looking for particular clients.

In any case, they're so grateful for your referral! Just help them in the best way you can - which is often having a chat with them.

Happy Friday!
